STORE

STORE was set up in 2003 on Hoxton Street, London, in a single-fronted high-street shop that was formerly a fishmonger and subsequently a hairdresser’s salon. Exhibitions have showcased the best of emerging international art, including debut British solo shows by Marc Bauer, Ryan Gander and Claire Harvey, and have ranged across all media. We operate as a commercial space but also in an older sense of the word 'store', as a repository of particular and idiosyncratic objects. These have ranged from post-it notes (Harvey), wallpaper (Bauer), an analogue bus destination board (Gander), drawings by policemen (Chris Evans) paint on canvas (Liz Neal) and encaustic on board (Andrew Rucklidge). We show things we like – objects gathered for aesthetic consideration, presented as commodities, but which can be understood as symbols of a very different set of values.
