Bellwether

Bellwether was founded in 1999 by a group of young artists in Williamsburg. Solely owned and operated since 2000 by Becky Smith, Bellwether’s mission is to nurture and establish the careers of young artists.

In June 2004, Bellwether expanded and relocated to Chelsea. Recent shows of note include “Objects of Virtue” by Kirsten Hassenfeld, an installation of over-sized translucent gem and crystalline sculptures painstakingly crafted predominantly from paper. The show received favorable reviews in: The New York Times Magazine, ArtForum.com, Time Out New York, Art in America, The Village Voice, Art on Paper, Interview, ArtNews, The Week, and Gay City News. In addition, “Love Parade” by Tanyth Berkeley, a photograph and video installation, was reviewed in Art in America, New York Times, Village Voice, and Tema Celeste. Both Kirsten and Tanyth are featured in P.S.1’s “Greater New York.”

Our next two solo shows include Amy Wilson, whose drawings are somewhere between Darger and political blog, and Allison Smith, who combines craft, historical reenactment, and queer culture signifiers to make her installations. Fall 2005 will feature solo shows by Adam Cvijanovic, Marc Swanson and Ellen Altfest.
