 Born 1971 in Paris, France
Yto Barrada’s work, which is primarily photographic, but also video based, expresses her double cultural belonging. Since she moved back to Tangiers, her work has been focusing on the Moroccan city and its life. Seen from the angle of everyday life, Barrada’s images document the issues that come along with the notions of immigration and boarders: illegal activities, work in the western factories or the dangers of living clandestinely…
“When I photograph the candidates of exile in Tangiers, I cannot ignore the fact that I am in my father’s birthplace, where my mother came to lose her way. (...) In my photographs, I try to exorcise the violence of the departure (that of others) while living the experience -that is not without violence- of my return (home). Maybe there is a connection between this very personal experience and the situation of a population that is trying to leave the country, in which it has not found its place.”
