American artist Melanie Schiff works in the photographic medium, capturing glimpsed moments of pause that seem to border on the spiritual. Multiple themes and symbols recur—such as landscape, the body and pop culture—subtly evoking a sexuality poised between nature, chemistry, formalism and the palpable inaction that allows for this poetic intersection to occur. Schiff’s investigations into natural light--filtered through windows or objects such as empty CD cases, bottles or light fixtures--form prisms of color and study the simple yet complex interaction of light and shadow, and it is this play of light and its effects, reflected off everyday objects, that bring a sense of magic to the mundane.
For VOLTA4 Schiff created a limited edition of self-portraits - Self-Portrait after John's - that pulls together all of the threads of her practice; her work was on show at this past Whitney Biennial, 2008.
