Tara Strickstein

Stuffed, 2010

Bloodshed Event presents Stuffed, the first in a new series of calculated situational constructs by artist Tara Strickstein, rooted in social psychology and behavioral theory. A means to maneuver human agency through subtle decision-making conflicts, this interactive performance work, featuring transgender taxi dancers and a pie-eating competition, investigates cognitive dissonance as it relates to gluttony and lust.

Pataphor (pride, greed and envy) will be exhibited at NEXT Art Fair, Chicago, April 29-May 3, 2010 and Sensitivity Training (sloth and wrath) as part of VOLTA6, Basel, June 16-20, 2010.

Andrea Bianconi

Is Land, 2010

IS-LAND, a performance by Andrea Bianconi, explores the multifaceted aspect of human identity and how it can become entangled in itself, making reference to the surreal universe of both Italo Calvino’s literature and Borges’s imaginative landscape. Bianconi expresses the relationship between the concept of  “I” and the different facets of “myself” by interacting with different materials suspended from various ropes.  Emerging from the wall like a waterfalll, Bianconi engages with this projection of himself, along with the many other objects that encompass the space (sculptures, drawings, artist books). The result can be equated with an oniric or psychological journey: the man is isolated in his sensations. The human being is like an island or, in some way, he IS - LAND.

David Blandy

My Philosophy

a selection of films presented by Artprojx and VOLTA NY

For My Philosophy, David Blandy brings together a selection of his work from the past 8 years, all of which explores ways to live life in the modern world. Where do we find ideas to believe in if organised religion and philosophy no longer feel relevant, if popular culture is the only authoritative voice to which we have access? Blandy seeks answers to life's questions from Ben E. King, Bruce Lee, KRS-One and David Carradine. The program will include Samurai Story (2008), in which Blandy tries to live by the code of the Samurai in a Japanese garden in Cheshire. The piece features a soundtrack written by English Dub legend Manasseh.

David Blandy has just won The South Bank Show/The Times Breakthrough Award presented at a ceremony shown on ITV.

Nicholas Buffon

A Sight of Death, 2010

Based in Seattle, Nicholas Buffon obsessively draws the micro-level with ball point pen and uses paint to render archetypes of the macro-pop world. In his performances, the tools of painting are props and the stuff of the body is additional material put to the service of the artist's role as the absurd agent of very serious histories.

Intuitive Consulting and the Benefits of Meditation

A Workshop by Emily Stroia and Therese Relucio

This workshop will provide information on the benefits of meditation not only from a holistic point of view but will provide evidence from a scientific perspective, as well.  Led by two professional Intuitive Consultants, Emily Stroia and Therese Relucio, a brief guided meditation will follow.  The second half of the workshop will consist of a discussion of the Law of Attraction and will conclude with actually creating a dreamboard.

Emily Stroia is a professional intuitive consultant who has a deep passion for helping others while encouraging their movement in a positive direction. Her psychic readings are detailed and highly accurate, allowing her to answer client's questions as well as helping them to understand their own process of self-growth and achieving their goals.

As a child, Emily first discovered her psychic ability when her frequent visions and dreams would reveal itself to be accurate. She has always felt a strong attraction to the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of life and continues to delve deeper into each. Believing strongly in her intuition and psychic abilities, as well as wanting to express her deep desire to help people, Emily decided to utilize her abilities to turn her passion into a profession.

Emily has completed all levels of the psychic development course at Holistic Studies Institute, which includes extensive study and practice in its training.  Emily expresses a great sense of genuineness, enthusiasm and respect for all of her clients. Please visit her website at www.emilystroia.com

Therese Relucio is a professional, compassionate and loving being who is strongly rooted and guided by her natural intuitive capabilities - those of which she has developed during related classes.  She regards her work as a professional intuitive to be one of service to humanity, communicating with spirits and the Divine Parent with the best intentions for all.

At a very early age Therese realized that she had always been able to see and communicate with particular spirits that seemed to always be around her.  Oblivious to why she was able to do this, she freely allowed it to be incorporated as a positive part of her life.

After a significant out of body experience at the age of 20, Therese felt compelled to journey through a path of deep spirituality and want of understanding the larger meaning of life and its purpose.  A constant learning experience, she is continuing on her path of personal growth and spiritual development.

Therese has taken and completed the Psychic Development course at Holistic Studies Institute in NYC.  She is certified by the American Board of Holistic Practitioners and is pursuing additional training in the areas of holistic and spiritual work.  Please visit her website at www.thereserelucio.com

A Workshop by  NOBODY PUTS BABY IN A CORNER

Did you ever dream of a collective mode - your body as part of a mass of bodies?

Come together to share dreams, wishes, fantasies and desires. Join us in our search for collective solutions to individual problems! The NPBIAC workshop will include speaking in rounds, physical exercises, intimate discussions and of course, end with an orgasmic energy massage. The workshop is open to 10 participants. Early registration is welcome at: info@scaramoucheart.com

NOBODY PUTS BABY IN A CORNER is a series of feminist gatherings in NYC through 2009-2010 initiated by Malin Arnell
and Johanna Gustavsson, two Swedish artists currently attending the Whitney Independent Study Program. The idea is to create an ongoing feminist discussion, to share fascination, indignation and excitement about societal structures, private parties, political fiction, personal faction and all those situations that constitutes everyday life. The project itself aims to expand experiences of collaboration and develop participatory practices. With our activities we hope to contribute to the overthrowing of male supremacy, ethnical supremacy and of hierarchies connected to physical and mental ability, sexuality and class. We work by applying feminist pedagogy.

Maria José Arjona

Time in Performance

This conversation uses some of Maria José Arjona’s performances to address the relevance of long durational pieces in a time where speed and fast pace have overwhelmed our capacity to experience images as spaces for thought and reflection. By weaving her personal experiences, first as a dancer and later as a performance artist, the conversation will lead to a series of questions regarding the philosophical aspect of the body in long durational work, as it reiterates its role and profound implications and effects in contemporary society.
