Santiago Sierra

Born 1966 in Madrid, Spain

Sierra gained extensive international recognition in 2001, when he was commissioned by several major institutions worldwide, between them PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York. For the 50th Venice Biennale in 2005 Sierra was invited by Rosa Martínez to represent Spain, the same year he realized the work Haus im Schlamm at Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover.

 

In 2006 his work 245 m3 in Stommeln Synagogue, Pulheim, Germany got massive attention. The following year an exhibition at Lisson Gallery, London included among other works Submission (formerly word of fire), realized in Anapra 2006-2007 on the Mexican side of the border with the United States and 21 anthropometric modules made of human faeces by the people of Sulabh International, India, 2005-2006. So far this year he had solo shows at Magasin3 Stockholm Kunstalle, prometeogallery di Ida Pisani in Milan and Madre Museum in Naples.
