Matthew Rich

In my work, paint is not strictly a rarified tool for depicting with virtuosic brushstrokes and effects but also a literal material with weight, elasticity, etc., properties that are traditionally aligned with sculptural materials and three-dimensional space. As corners wrinkle, borders align and seams push away, the viewer sees image and structure simultaneously.
