Margarita Cabrera was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1973. At age 11 she immigrated to the US with her family and they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a teenager she and her family moved to El Paso, Texas where she took an interest in the arts. She would later use her childhood memories of living in Mexico as a major influence in her future works. After high school Cabrera moved to New York City for seven years to study art at Hunter College. She graduated with a BFA and later an MFA before moving back to El Paso a few days before 9/11.

Cabrera’s works is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the United States and Mexico. She creates sculptures made out of mediums ranging from vinyl, fabric and ceramic that replicate specifically chosen objects in life-size formats.
