Liat Yossifor

presented by Galerie Anita Beckers

Born 1974 in Tel Aviv, Israel

Yossifor uses an old medium to paint archaic ideas, a conversation about painting and the construction of history is echoed back and forth between the paint and what is depicted. Her references are archetypes: soliders, monumnets, and painting's own history.  These archypes  are painted as a series of failed accounts and ambiguous narratives, and they become about feelings associated with stories already told. Painting attaches itself to these forms, nostalgic and broken, and pushes itself to present time, closing the distance between what we think has passed and what is currently happening. Linearity is ignored, and what is considered is the effect of the present (thought) on past ideas rather than how the past shapes the present.
