Born 1976 in California, USA

John Copeland works in a dark expressionistic style exploring and digesting weird and disturbing moments of everyday life. Through his distinct blurry technique Copeland maintains an almost Hitchcock-like suspense in his works. In paintings that depict a garden party turning into an orgy, rivalling youngsters, a dissolving map of the American states or an archaeologist uncovering a grave, Copeland hints that dystopia is a constant factor and presence in life, but not something you cannot engage in and discuss. Dark humor, an eerie suspense and a sincere fascination of the many strange facets of human existence are reoccurring themes in the works. Copeland is part of a younger generation of prolific New York based painters revitalizing the narrative of contemporary painting. He successfully showed solo at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, as well as he was represented by the gallery at Volta NY 2010.
