Cameron Platter

Born 1978 in Johannesburg, South Africa

Cameron Platter completed his BA (FA) Hons. at the Michaelis School of Fine in Cape Town in 2001. Since graduating, Cameron platter has mounted ten solo exhibitions, most recently at the Ernst Hilger Gallery in Vienna. He has also exhibited extensively in group exhibitions throughout Europe, the United States, and South Africa. Including presentations at Art Basel 39, the New Director’s Showcase in Cannes, France and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Cameron Platter’s work creates an intoxicating vision of urban contemporary Africa. He has been called, amongst other things: “the delinquent love child of Quentin Tarantino and Dr Seuss”, “the undisputed king of Afro-bling,” and “an agent provocateur with a sinister agenda.” Drawing on traditional craft and wood carving techniques, Platter combines African street culture with influences as diverse as Nigerian ‘porno’ films, township couture, and corrupt politicians. Using sculpture, video, drawing and print, Platter creates a tableau that is at once a sincere homage to historical themes and an ironical take on contemporary Africa.
