Boris Hoppek

Born 1970 in Siegen, Germany
Lives and works in Barcelona, Spain

In the 80ies Boris Hoppek counted as one of the German graffiti pioneers. By now, he has emerged to be one of the most reknown international urban artists. Starting off in the streets, he consequently evolved his art to a multi-layered work including drawings, photography, sculptures or installations. Within his artwork, Hoppek quite obviously deals with subjects such as sexuality, racism or violence – without caring about “political correctness“.

Thus, the viewer is directly drawn into a voyeuristic and political incorrect situation – most of the times reacting with a feeling of insecurity. At the same time the radicality of Hoppek’s subject matter stands in sharp contrast to the execution of the works themselves. Especially his unequalled drawings fascinate with their reduced application of colour and form. It is the precisely led line of Hoppeks drawings that gives the apparently monsterous characters and images a coat of subtility and fragility, that – on the first view – one would not assume.
