Mustafa Maluka

Born 1976 in Cape Town, South Africa

 

Mustafa Maluka’s portraits of imaginary people evolve from photographic images which catch his eye in magazines and on the internet. He is drawn to images of anonymous people who have a connecting gaze and a presence. His monumental portraits are given titles that are phrases from song lyrics; accordingly, they become metaphors for sentiments and emotions rather than a representation of a sitter. Maluka studied painting at De Ateliers in Amsterdam and has held solo exhibitions in Cape Town, Amsterdam, Geneva and Berlin; recent group shows include Flow at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2008) and the seventh São Paul Bienal (2006).
