Piet graduated from the Design Academy of Eindhoven in 1990 and has been working as a furniture designer in his own company since then. His ability to combine unusual materials with elementary production processes has become the focal characteristic of his work. Piet received national acclaim for his cupboard made from scrap-wood, the prototype for the now hugely popular series. The inspiration for this was a reaction to the then prevailing penchant for perfection in design during the early 1990s. The retrospective publication about his work, ‘Boek’, written by design critic and curator Max Fraser, was launched with an exhibition in 2006 at the Rabih Hage gallery. MoMA commissioned pieces for their Dutch-themed Café in 1995 and he has also exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, 1996) and MU Art Foundation (Eindhoven, 1998). It is his aesthetic sensibility that has captivated an international audience and positioned Piet Hein Eek as a highly collectable name.
