Matt Stokes

Born 1973 in Cornwall, UK

Cipher is the newest film from Matt Stokes, winner of the 2006 Beck’s Futures Prize. Using the traditional means of the pipe organ, the film explores the music of Fimbulvetr, a Scottish club that developed a cult following for its mix of dark, ambient genres. The composition sees contemporary discordance and drone applied to the classical insturment often associated with the church. Stokes’ film visually dissects the pipe organ as a living breathing organism in order to present its grand historic role , while reinterpreting the sub-culture and apocalyptic mythologies associated with Fimbulvetr.
