Laura Lima

Born 1971 in Governador Valadares, Brazil

Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In 2004, Laura Lima created the work “O Baile”- a ball that took place during the Mercosul Biennial and later at Parque Lage School of Visual Arts, Rio de Janeiro/Brasil. Based on an oil painting from the 17th century, the work involved 55 artists who performed the characters of the original work (king, queen, nobles, musicians, servants etc).

Having the body as a strong reference in all history of her work, the artist brought, in 2006, her new version of the collection named “Costumes”- pieces for the humans and animals, to the XXVII International São Paulo Biennial, in which she took part for the second time after two important national individual exhibits in Brazil- at Museu da Pampulha, BH, 2002, and Casa Triângulo, SP, 2003, and international shows such as the Chapter Art Centre, Cardiff- Wales/England, 2004 and at Hardcore Art Gallery, Miami/ USA, besides many group shows around the world (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil; Madrid/ Spain; Washington DC, Portland, New York/USA; Normandie/ France; Santiago/ Chile etc).

Winner of the Marcantonio Vilaça Award 2005.
