Melissa Bent and Mirabelle Marden opened Rivington Arms in January of 2002 with the purpose of working with their contemporaries, creating a gallery space for young emerging artists without any limitations on what could be shown or how it could be exhibited. They believe downtown New York to be a burgeoning art destination once again, which has increasingly become true with the future move of the New Museum to the Bowery. In April 2006 Rivington Arms is moving to a new location in the East Village on 2nd Street off of the Bowery. In the larger space they will continue showing the artists they have worked with since opening four years ago, as well as expanding and introducing more artists to their roster.
